NEW YORK, NEW YORK - TELL US ALL ABOUT IT
It's such a cliché but I'm so in love with this place. I actually have "date days and nights" where I spend time alone in the city wandering the streets, window shopping and grabbing something to eat at the amazing restaurants. Every time I look up and see the Empire State-, or the Flatiron Building, I smile.
YOU RECENTLY WRAPPED THE MOVIE "DAYS OF POWER" WITH ERIC ROBERTS. WHAT WAS THAT EXPERIENCE LIKE?
It was great shooting “Days of Power” - real fun with a talented cast and crew. And I got to spend a lot of time with dogs which is my favourite animal.
The film has a strong message about how you shouldn't buy dogs from puppy mills, but rather adopt. It's based on actual events and I play the lead, a Swiss singer called, Milow the Girl. It was fun being a rock star.
WHY ACTING?
Filmmaking is art and I love being a part of creating beautiful art. I think it's wonderful to be able to tell a story that leaves the viewer with something that makes them think.
WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU FACED IN YOUR CHOSEN CAREER?
Dealing with jealousy and people talking about you behind your back. Now I'm alone in another country and the struggle is even harder. Eventually I think it will pay off. There are many productions here; if you're talented, reliable and pour your soul into your work, it will get you somewhere.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE MOVIE AND WHY?
There are so many. I love “Dogville” and other films by Lars Von Trier. “Pulp Fiction” among others by Quentin Tarantino. “Eyes Wide Shut”, “The Shining”, “A Clockwork Orange” by Stanley Kubrick. I love Italian classics by Pasolini and Fellini. And “The Godfather”, “Taxi Driver”, “The Departed”... the list goes on and on.
A good film called "Force Majeure" by Swedish director Ruben Östlund premiered at Cannes this year. I’d love to be part of a masterpiece like that and all the other movies I mentioned.
NAME THREE PEOPLE YOU ADMIRE
My brother, Marilyn Monroe, and anyone who stands up for animals.
IN ADDITION TO BEING AN ACTRESS YOU RUN A SUCESSFUL EVENT COMPANY. HOW DO YOU FIND THE TIME TO DO BOTH IN TWO DIFFERENT GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATIONS?
It's a bit stressful at times, often too much to do. At the same time I want to be successful and there are no short cuts, you have to work hard.
SOMEONE ONCE SAID "PUT SOME WINGS ON THAT KID" IN RELATION TO YOUR TRAVELS. IF YOU HAD WINGS WHICH ANIMAL WOULD YOU BE?
Hmm, I see myself as different kinds of animals, neither of them can fly. I think owls are magnificent, I'd pick one of them.
YOU'RE ALSO A VEGAN, WHERE'S THE BEST PLACE TO GET GOOD VEGAN FOOD IN NYC?
This city is vegan heaven with many great places. My favorite places are: Peacefood Café, Candle 79, Candle Café, Pure Food & Wine, One Lucky Duck, Quintessence, Rockin' Raw, Blossom, V-note, Sacred Chow, Bliss Café, Angelica's Kitchen and Beyond Sushi.
I use an app called "Happy Cow", it shows you nearby vegetarian/vegan restaurants, cafés and shops. Wherever I am in the world I can locate veg food.
HOW DO YOU STAY FIT WITH SUCH CLEAR SKIN WHEN YOU HAVE BEEN REWARDED BY A RESTAURANT FOR BEING ONE OF THE FEW PEOPLE WHO'S TASTED ALL THE DESSERTS ON THEIR MENU?
*Laughs* that was so funny, that restaurant actually gave me a gift for having tasted all of their 20 desserts. I always taste everything on the menu, but they usually don't notice it.
I take very good care of my skin because I have acne prone skin. I use the best products and do four steps twice a day plus scrubs and masks during the week. A vegan diet is best for your body too, so that helps. I should drink more water though, I'm terrible at that.
I used to go horseback riding every day. With moving around in different countries, I haven't had time to find a "new stable". I do miss it a lot. In Sweden I would go to the gym four to five times a week for spinning, boxing, Afro dance and other classes. I've been so busy in the States that unfortunately I haven't been working out at all. I walk a lot though.
TOTALLY RANDOM BUT, A WORD OR SENTENCE IN ITALIAN TO SAY TO A PERSON WHO'S GETTING ON YOUR LAST NERVE
Ma quanto sei fastidioso, lasciami in pace!

WHERE ARE YOU NOW, WHERE ARE YOU FROM, AND WHERE ARE YOU GOING?
I’m in Berlin sitting on the floor of my studio: The Dreamhaus, Berlin - a center for yoga, contemporary dance, gyrotonic and hula hoop. I’m here for the next few months, teaching and documenting a few of my choreographic works and then I’m off to L.A. for the winter to perform. I’m originally from Vancouver Island, Canada.
HOW DID YOU ARRIVE AT THE DESTINATION OF BEING AN ENTREPRENEUR, HOOP DANCE PERFORMER, GYROTONIC TRAINER AND YOGA INSTRUCTOR?
I’m classically trained at the Royal Academy, and in the Cecchetti Method of Ballet since the age of five. I discovered Hoop Dance 10 years ago, fell in love and had to find a way to make it my career. The hoop provided me with an outlet for expression outside the rigid confines of pink ballet tights.
I decided to go to university for choreography and contemporary dance to become an expert in movement and the body. I financed my studies teaching hoop dance, which led to opening the first and only hula hoop school in Montreal. I was performing, and dancing a lot, and I ended up with a terrible dance injury. Then I discovered Gyrotonic and it healed my injury almost simultaneously. Yoga has always been an intrinsic part of my practice as an artist. Now I’m training hard again in all these things for my performances and also sharing what I believe to be the magic combo training with my dear students here in Berlin.
HOOPURBIA?
Hoopurbia is the hula hooper’s heaven on earth. It’s a week long festival where beginner and advanced hoop dancers, professional artists, dancers and musicians meet up for an artistic residency to learn from one another, perform and create. It’s a lab for experimentation and creative evolution. There are yoga and contemporary dance workshops every morning, hoop dance workshops in the afternoon, and performances at night. It started in Berlin, and it will be popping up in other cities in the coming years. I founded Hoopurbia in 2012. It was just a vision a friend and I came up with on a bikeride around Berlin one rainy November day, we had no idea if anyone would show up, but we’ve now done the festival three years in a row and it’s grown bigger than I could have ever imagined.
YOUR STAGE NAME, BEKA HOOP, IS IT AN ALTER EGO?
Beka Hoop lives on stage. Rebecca Halls is the one behind the scenes running the business and paying the bills.
HOW MUCH OF YOUR PERFORMANCE IS PRE-CHOREOGRAPHED AND HOW MUCH IS IMPROVISATION?
My performance is a structured improvisation. I’m a compulsive choreographer, always making up new sequences for each show, unique to the venue and the atmosphere. My dance is at its best when it’s completely free. I build a skeleton, and then I dance around it.
HOW IS IT POSSIBLE FOR LASER BEAMS TO SHOOT OUT OF YOUR HULA HOOPS WHEN THERE AREN'T ANY WIRES ATTACHED?
This is high tech hula technology. State of the art. I designed my laser hoop in collaboration with my genius friend. This sleek piece of technology is currently the only one of its kind on the market, it’s an idea we have been working on since 2007. We finally managed to fit all the wires in the hoop this year.
HOW DID THE #REGENERATE14 COLLABORATION WITH "THE LAB MAGAZINE" AND GENERATOR HOSTELS COME ABOUT?
It all happened really fast. I was dancing wildly in a Berlin club where my friend was deejaying. The guys from the Lab were also there and happened to snap some photos of me. I was just coming out the other end of Hoopurbia and had lots of new work to show, they asked if I could do a video shoot, and I said yes. The next thing I knew I was in Copenhagen.
HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN YOUR DIET, FITNESS AND BEAUTY REGIMEN GIVEN THE RIGOROUS NATURE OF YOUR PROFESSION?
I don’t smoke. I drink lots of water. I try to stay away from sugar. I do yoga everyday. I go to bed early whenever there’s time. And I try to keep a positive attitude and live with integrity.
WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL STYLE - OTHER THAN THOSE SASSY LEOTARDS AND SPANDEX YOU WEAR?
I have a bodysuit collection in different colours, textures and cuts. I try to collect a new bodysuit from a local designer in every city I perform. I love to wear stretch fabrics, i like bold colours and patterns. I guess you could call it performable street wear.
WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU OFFER ANYONE SEEKING TO BECOME A FITNESS GURU OR PERFORMANCE ARTIST?
Train hard. Take care of your body. Go see lots of shows. Travel. Get inspired. Don’t copy. Stay true. Create from your heart. Find a teacher and never quit being a student. And never give up even if it seems impossible. Determination is priceless.↧

Candidly Nicole

Yo! What's black and rhymes with Dr. Dre?
Snoop Dogg!
I wish I could claim that joke as mine. But it's all Nicole Riche and her Larry David-esque sense of humour in the AOL webseries, and VH1 TV show entitled, "Candidly Nicole". The 20 minutes VHI1 listing is based on the AOL programme's five minute clips which is in turn based on Richie's Twitter feed. A bit confusing, I know. Thusly, I provided the links to clear that right up.
"Candidly Nicole" is a minutiae of daily life shot in a cinéma variété type style, with featuring guest appearances by the freshly minted model and junior sister, Sofia Richie, botanical expert Lionel Richie - hey daddy! and founder and creative director Katherine Power of "Who What Wear" and "The Coveteur", among other familiar and less familiar faces. It's not a reality show, except it's not "scripted" either.
And although married with kids now, it's still the same playful Nicole from back in the dizzay when she was chillin like a villain with Paris Hilton on "The Simple Life".
I highly recommend watching all the episodes in one sitting to get the full experience. Next season comes out in the summer. I suggest the same back-to-back procedure after the airing of the season finale.
That's how I roll. You hear that "Mad Men"?
Am I supposed to wait for three consecutive years to find out about the life and labour of a hobbit in Middle-Earth?
Girl. No.

Adding too much baking soda or baking powder!
WHAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT INGREDIENT IN ALL OF YOUR RECIPES?

START FROM THE BEGINNING. WHERE WERE YOU BORN AND RAISED?
I was born and raised in London but we spent every weekend in Hampshire. I've always loved variety in my surroundings and can’t stay in one place for too long, city or country.
YOUR SISTER NAMED YOU AFTER THE MAIN CHARACTER IN “ALICE IN WONDERLAND”. HOW INFLUENCED ARE YOU BY LEWIS CAROLL’S IMAGINARY WORLD AS A RESULT?
Very much so! I've had a very active imagination from a young age and I continually revisit my favourite children’s stories. I'm in awe of those authors who create entire alternative worlds.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A BAG LADY?
I suppose it was less of a decision than a foregone conclusion. Once I realized fashion was how I wanted to channel my artistic side, leather came into the equation and a move to accessories was the only natural progression.
WHERE DID YOU RECEIVE YOUR TRAINING?
It all started with an eye opening Pattern Cutting short course at the London College of fashion, which led to LCF’s Portfolio building foundation degree and from there I got onto their Womenswear BA. Having started working with leather for my last project on the Portfolio building course, I then spent the first term of my BA experimenting further with the medium before leaving to start my journey with AEVHA London.
WHAT’S THE PHILOSPHY BEHIND AEVHA LONDON?
AEVHA London is about offering a refreshing modern classic alternative to the overtly branded, big name ‘It’ bag. The mixture of innately wearable, architectural shapes with standout hardware in metals and hand carved bone and hardwoods characterizes the more discreet and refined luxury of our lesser-known brand.
WHAT’S YOUR MOST FAVOURITE MATERIAL TO WORK WITH?
Leather! The range of finishes out there is endlessly inspiring and as we grow I will be experimenting more and more with the exciting technologies of Italy’s finest tanneries.
HOW DO YOU COME UP WITH IDEAS FOR YOUR COLLECTIONS?
My ideas come through a mixture of striking colours, inspiring materials and my innate aesthetic and love of sculptural structure. I'm thrilled with our new rosewood accessories featuring in this new Autumn Winter 2014-15 collection showing at London Fashion Week this month.
WHICH TRENDS FROM WHAT DECADE OR ERA WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE RETURN?
Fashion is an endless cycle, and as such I tend to see at least one past trend I'm delighted to work with every season! I think my favourite era in fashion would have to be the 1930s-40s.
YOUR BIGGEST FASHION PET PEEVE IS?
The lack of integrity of some of the self-made fashionistas out there. I have a moral issue with being approached and asked to pay for fashion forward individuals to feature/wear my product!
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR BEAUTY TIPS AND SECRETS AND SHOULD ONE MATCH ACCESSORIES TO THE SHADE OF ONE’S LIPSTICK?
Good skincare and a dash of eyeliner and lip colour. I go pretty au natural so wouldn’t be one to suggest matching your navy or burnt orange AEVHA London to your lipstick. The coral in our current colour palette could work out for you next season though!

These Hose Ain't Loyal
![]() |
Illustration By Teya Bozhilova Dilemma. I've started wearing pantyhose or stockings after something of a spring and summer induced hiatus. Problem, I can't keep these hose from ripping. Don't have a memory of this happening before. I use a mix of both high-end and budget brands. Quality isn't the issue. Neither are my ragged edge free nails. What to do? Should I take the hose out the package, moisten and freeze them? Spray them with aerosol hairspray? Or does it come down to the content of lycra perhaps? Any tips and, wait for it...tricks are appreciated. Keep 'em coming. These hose really need to start working for me. |

WHAT’S IT LIKE LIVING IN THE CITY OF LIGHTS AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED THERE?
I love Paris. It’s where I was born. I couldn’t see myself living in the suburbs for example. It has nothing to do with the city. Paris is always alive whether it be day or night, and everything is within close proximity. Paris is magical.
HOW DO YOU KEEP IT FASHIONABLY PARISIENNES?
I really don't have personal style. I change my look every day. I don't like keeping the same thing going. You'll find me in super classy attire as well as in sneakers.
WHEN AND WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME AN ACTRESS?
I never decided. I stumbled on it. I never thought of becoming an actress one day. “Girlhood” was a wildcard. My friends got noticed in the streets and told me about a casting and asked if I wanted to come. I didn’t believe it at first, it sounded impossible. Because I’m curious by nature, I decided to follow them. Once there I was offered to go through casting. I had nothing to lose, so I decided to try. I was later called back for several screen tests and then in the end I was told that I’d been given the role of the character called, “Lady”. Thanks to "Girlhood" I discovered the craft and immediately put the appropriate action in place. I met an agent and have since continued playing other roles.
IS IT A CAREER PATH THAT YOU WOULD RECOMMEND?
Absolutely. I’m living a dream!
WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT “GIRLHOOD” - THE MOVIE AND REAL LIFE AND DO YOU SHARE ANY SIMILAR TRAITS WITH THE CHARACTER YOU PLAY?
“Girlhood” is a fictional movie but a large part of it is grounded in reality. A lot of girls experience what occurs in the film. What happens to Marieme in the scene where she’s denied entry to high school by the principal, happened to me personally, I had the grades but was refused anyway when there were other girls whose grades weren't as good but went on to do their secondary school education. As for the character, "Lady", I'm completely different from her in real life. I'm not the leader of the group. I'm very sensitive. On the other hand, I can identify with friendship between girls. The complexity, the fun times and all that stuff.
YOU AND KARIDJA TOURÉ HAVE BEEN SELECTED FOR A CÉSAR FOR YOUR RESPECTIVE PERFORMANCES IN “GIRLHOOD”, HOW EXCITED ARE YOU ABOUT THAT?
We are super excited and especially proud of ourselves. It's encouraging and it’s a recognition of our work.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST THING ABOUT SHOOTING THE FILM?
It was the coolest and best film of my life (so far). We were in good company, and the crew was fun. The scenes in the film weren’t difficult to shoot. The only one that was tiring, is the fight scene. It was really hot. I had on a sweater, a jacket, and I had to keep falling to the ground. Apart from that, everything went well and we’re proud of the result.
WHICH MEDIUM DO YOU PREFER, TELEVESION OR CINEMA?
I like both. But, I prefer the big screen.
WHO’S YOUR FAVOURITE ACTOR?
I have several, Lupita N'yongo, Omar Sy, Leila Bekthi, Denzel Washington and more.
AND WHAT DO YOU DO BESIDES ACTING?
I just graduated high school and have decided to put my further studies on hold to take on more roles and devote myself to the world of cinema. If it doesn’t work out, then it’s back to class.

WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED AND HAVE YOU ALWAYS LIVED THERE?
I was born in Bulgaria where I presently live. It’s a beautiful small country in South Eastern Europe. We have a lovely sea, high mountain lakes and winter resorts. I’ve also lived in Spain.
HOW DID YOU BECOME A FASHION ILLUSTRATOR?
It sounds funny, but I discovered that the profession existed after I’d completed my first degree in Fashion Design. The decision to become a fashion illustrator came when I witnessed how many talented colleagues failed to get the recognition they deserved because of lack of drawing skills. I knew that my ability I could help make their ideas shine through.
WHAT QUALITIES DO DRAWINGS HAVE THAT PHOTOGRAPHY OR FILM DON’T?
I love and respect all types of art and I don’t put one over another. Illustration is just different from photography because in order to illustrate a design you just need an idea while in order to photograph it, you need to get your idea manufactured in advance.
WHEN AND WHY DID YOU START THE WEBSITE, I DRAW FASHION?
I Draw Fashion was launched on August 16, 2011. My idea was to create a place that I wish existed while I was learning to draw. From the many books in my library none of them actually guided me step-by-step to the final result. I learnt the hard way and I wanted to save other artists that time and frustration.
WHAT’S YOUR EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND?
I have BA in Fashion Design and MA in Illustration. I’ve also taken classes in Brand Management, Photography and Animation. When I was 14, my parents hired a private tutor to teach me how to paint using the long-established methods. So yes, I know how to draw vases with flowers and landscapes; I find it more interesting to illustrate ladies with long legs wearing nice designs instead.
WHAT’S IT LIKE WORKING AS A FREELANCE ILLUSTRATOR?
As many freelancers would probably agree, it’s both easy, and more difficult than having a nine-to-five working day. It’s easier because you can work whenever you get inspired. The client wants the illustration done and doesn’t really care if you are drawing it in the middle of night. At the same time it’s hard because you don’t have a fixed salary every month and you have to learn to be good at time-management which is challenging for many artists.
WHAT TECHNIQUES DO YOU USE?
I used to draw with markers the traditional way but now I use digital programs and a Wacom tablet to create my illustrations. It’s quicker and the illustrations still look like they’re drawn with markers, aquarelle or any other media.
WHAT ELSE DO YOU GET UP TO?
I’m currently working on my first e-book with tutorials on how to draw fashion sketches and templates. It should be ready by the end of the year and hopefully one day it will be published in book format, too.
WHICH ARTISTS INSPIRE YOU?
I admire the work of Jason Brooks and Arturo Elena. I also find inspiration in pinup art and comics. My style of drawing is a mix of fashion illustration and the mentioned artistic expressions.
HAVE YOU HAD TIME TO FOLLOW UP ON THE CURRENT FASHION SEASON AND HAVE YOU SEEN ANYTHING YOU’D WEAR NEXT FALL?
Marsala, Pantone Colour of 2015, is so feminine and stylish to me that I won’t only buy a dress in the shade, I’ll also incorporate it in my new illustrations together with the other colours and trends I love.

Swap Meet

That moment when I want to pull a switcheroo and swap the model's stockings and heels for the boho fab girl's leather lace up pumps. There's something about these put together pieces by Soojin Lee, that's Roman-esque-soldier-uniform-like: So something similar to a pair of gladiator sandals would be extremly, if not even more, fitting.
Aditionally, I command HBO to bring back "Rome".
Plus, I want a Lips Clutch from Lulu Guinness.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BECOME AN ALVIN AILEY DANCER?
It takes a lot of hard work, perseverance and sacrifice to be an Alvin Ailey dancer. The company tours more than half of the year, so I was always away from my husband, friends and family. The day-to-day life is a grind that includes loads of rehearsals and performances and every day counts as much as the last. With that being said, there is wonderful responsibility to uphold the historical legacy of the company. I was very proud to be a representative of an institution that inspired people wherever we performed.
WHAT'S YOUR EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND AND PERFORMING EXPERIENCE TO DATE?
I have an undergraduate degree in History from Columbia University in NYC and a master’s degree in Nonprofit Management from Washington University in St. Louis. I've been a principal dancer with Dance Theatre of Harlem, Complexions Contemporary Ballet and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. I’ve also performed in gigs with Beyoncé John Legend, Andre 3000 and Alicia Keys.
WHAT ROLE DID DANCE PLAY IN YOUR CHILDHOOD?
Dance was my childhood. I spent every waking minute moving and taking lessons. My parents were very supportive of my dream and it helped that my sister was into it too!
WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU'VE COME ACROSS IN YOUR CAREER SO FAR?
My biggest challenge with my career has been dealing with injuries and arthritis. I hate dancing in pain, so having an auto-immune disorder that affects my joints poses a significant problem. I’ve learned to manage the disease with medication and diet. But it’s a constant challenge. I’ve had to take three long breaks from my professional career because of injuries and surgeries.
WHAT’S IT LIKE RUNNING A DANCE COLLECTIVE WITH YOUR SISTER?
It’s a pleasure and a dream come true to run D(n)A Arts with Daisha. We’ve both been in the dance world for such a long time, but have never had the chance to work together until we started this initiative.
WHAT INTERESTS DO YOU HAVE BESIDES DANCING?
I love to spend time with family and friends, go to the movies and try out new restaurants.
TRENDS DO YOU FOLLOW THEM OR DO YOU WEAR WHAT YOU LIKE?
I don't really follow any fashion trends. I wear what I like. Most of the time, I’m running around rocking yoga clothes. I lead a very active lifestyle and like to be comfortable.
WHAT'S THE BEST BEAUTY ADVICE YOU'VE EVER RECIEVED FROM A PROFESSIONAL?
The best beauty advice that I’ve ever received came from my mom. Beauty comes from within. A clean face and brush of mascara can go a long way.
YOU’RE AN ADVOCATE FOR JUICING AND YOU’VE CUT GLUTEN INCLUDING DAIRY FROM YOUR DIET. WHAT HEALTH BENEFITS HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED AND WHAT RISKS ARE INVOLVED WHEN ELIMINATING CERTAIN VITAMINES, MINERALS AND PROTEINS FROM YOUR DIET, ESPECIALLY AS A DANCER?
I'm an advocate of juicing and I maintain a low gluten and dairy diet. However, I eat very well and make sure I get enough carbohydrates, calcium and vitamins by eating other foods. I burn a lot of energy throughout the day, so I am always fueling my body with good foods and juices.
ANY GUILTY PLEASURE?
On a cheat day, I love chocolate chip cookies.
